HEALTH, HOUSING, AND HUMAN RIGHTSAdvance Public Policies to End HomelessnessTo advance our collective efforts to end homelessness, the National Health Care for the Homeless Council presents the 2009 National Health Care for the Homeless Conference & Policy Symposium, which is built around the theme Working Together for Health, Housing, and Human Rights. The Conference takes place in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, June 25 - Saturday, June 27, with Pre-Conference Institutes scheduled for Wednesday, June 24. Policy Symposium events are integrated throughout this year's conference. Join service providers, HCH consumers, and advocates from across the country to promote the policies necessary to make homelessness increasingly rare and brief.
POLICY SYMPOSIUM EVENTS

Follow the link at the end of this HCH Mobilizer to join us in Washington, D.C. An Advocate's Policy Forum & Congressional Visits: This new Pre-Conference Institute on Wednesday, June 24, includes an "Advocacy 101" training to familiarize attendees with National Council policy priorities. Participants will take a walking tour of Capitol Hill, attend a policy briefing in the Capitol Building, and conduct legislative visits with their Congressional representatives. We ask that Policy Forum participants schedule meetings with their representatives in advance; see details below under TAKE ACTION. Congressional Briefing: On Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. in Room HC 6 of the Capitol Building, the National Council will host a Congressional Briefing on Health & Homelessness for Members of Congress, Congressional staffers, and advocates. The briefing is sponsored by Congressman Eric Massa (NY 29), a strong proponent for H.R. 676, The United States National Health Insurance Act (Expanded and Improved Medicare for All), and a powerful voice in the health care debate. Symposium Plenary: On Thursday morning, June 25, Congressman Barney Frank (D, MA-8), Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, will deliver the annual Susan L. Neibacher Address. Congressman Frank supports single payer health care reform and was actively involved in passing the National Housing Trust Fund. Also during the Symposium Plenary, the National Consumer Advisory Board will present the Ellen Daily Consumer Advocate Award to James Crawford Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland. Rally for Human Rights: Symposium activities conclude with a 6 p.m. rally at Union Station Plaza, located just a short walk from the conference hotel. Join advocates, service providers and consumers to speak out for the right to health care, housing and livable incomes. | |
